THE JOGGER
He came out of the east.
A silhouette trickling over the dawn.
With the smile of the Beast,
and a heart that just ran on.
The dust clouds rose from his heels.
His eyes were warm and gray.
He seemed to see the Seals,
yet he just plodded on into his day.
There was no turning from the track.
Just the endless pursuit.
There was no turning back.
Just the search for forbidden fruit.
He ran over hill and dale.
His muscles rippling with motion.
He never seemed to exhale,
and I wondered how he would breach the ocean.
Then as he neared the burning tree.
I grew to understand his flight.
I watched him turn like a faded key.
His life slowly unlocked from his breast.
Empty and alone his life had been.
For he knew only the test,
and missed the meaning at every road bend.
