The Universalism of Mozi is much like many other philosophies and religions. By using a set of beliefs concerning the nature and purpose of the universe, devotion of the people, and ritual; Mozi and the Sage King lore, set up a moral code for the governing of human affairs. Mozi uses the set of beliefs from the Sage Kings to explain the universe, and how benevolent men should behave, so that the universe will remain happy, and thus if the universe is happy, all men will be happy.
Mozi’s codes of morality were judged by his own standard. This standard had three main phases which were called the Gauges of Precedent, Evidence and Application:
“How does one assess a claim’s precedents? Our Teacher Mozi says, ‘One looks up for precedents and actions of the Sage Kings.’
How does one assess a claim’s evidence? Our Teacher Mozi says, ‘One looks down to examine evidence of what the people have heard and seen.’
How does one assess a claim’s application? Our Teacher Mozi says, ‘One implements it as state policy, and see’s whether or not it produces benefit for the state, family, and people.’” (Readings in Classical Chinese Philosophy, Ivanhoe, p.j. and Van Norden, b.w. 2005).
One of the best examples of this was Mozi’s belief in Ghosts and Spirits in the universe. Mozi believed that if an innocent man was killed, his ghost, the spirits, and even the universe would rise against the killer. One story spoke of Du Bo who appeared at 12 noon in a chariot, and killed his murdering ruler. In his essay he cites many examples of ghosts coming back to kill bad lords.
How does he justify the existence of ghosts? He uses his claim standard, Gauges of Precedent, Evidence and Application, showing this is true: a. He cites the Sage Kings Lore and lists many cases of ghosts returning and killing their killers. b. He states that the evidence and sighting of ghosts by the people proves that they are real. c. He states that the rituals and ceremonies must be done with great reverence as a policy.
Summing up: Mozi was a great philosopher, who used universalism to set the standard for his people. His standards were based on ensuring benevolent men who did the right thing, would achieve the most out of the universe. He used his three point standard for claims, (Gauges of Precedent, Evidence and Application), and by doing this, showed his people their truth, and why benevolent men are at one with the universe.
