Heraclitus:
6th century Philosopher.
SOURCE: ANCIENT GREECE, The Great Men, Their Lives and Works.
Author: Papadogeorgos Georgios
Key Notes:
Heraclitus was known as the "Dark Philosopher". His personality was much like Eeyore in Winnie the Poo. He was melancholic, but not pensive. He was noble born, but did not claim his title, he withdrew into solitude, and had great contempt of mankind as a whole.
Heraclitus has many sayings, he is one of the first people to bring up the idea of evolution. His famous quote, "All is in flux", which today is translated as, "The only constant, is change." and "You can never swim in the same river twice." showed his philosophy that everything in the Universe, is always changing. "All things are, and nothing remains still."
Heraclitus believed that Fire was the stuff all the universe was made from. That like Fire everything is in constant motion. Fire, to Water, to condensation, leading to Earth, which led back to Fire.
It is said that the work of Heraclitus was given to Socrates by Euripides, (another famous philosopher), and he asked Socrates his opinion. Socrates replied "What I understand is important, but what I could not understand was equally as important, you have to be a very strong swimmer of the spirit not to drown in this book."
